Sage

Support and anti-caster utility — not a solo-nuke rival to Wizard.

A note before you build this: Sage's practical solo-leveling picture (bolt-spam efficiency, Endow-assisted party farming, and similar) is still being investigated further. What's confirmed below — the skill tree, weapon, and what Sage's kit is actually composed of — is solid. Treat the playstyle recommendation as a starting point, not a final verdict.

Quick Build

Recommended Build
Support/utility caster
Playstyle
Anti-caster tools, elemental weapon buffs for allies, party utility
Difficulty
Moderate — success depends on your party, more than Wizard does
Primary Stats
INT, DEX, VIT
Primary Weapon
Rod or Book
Best For
Players who enjoy a support/utility role over a pure damage dealer
  • Strengths: Magic Rod and Spell Break are real anti-caster tools; Land Protector is genuine party defense; elemental weapon Endows buff allies directly.
  • Weaknesses: Sage's own tree is confirmed to lack Storm Gust, Meteor Storm, Jupitel Thunder, Lord of Vermilion, Water Ball, Ice Wall, and Sight Blaster — every one of Wizard's late nukes. Napalm Beat is the only real damage skill.

Why This Build?

Sage shares the Mage branch's early bolts and Napalm Beat with Wizard, but its own tree branches into Study → Free Cast → Hindsight (utility), Land Protector, Dispel, Magic Rod/Spell Break (anti-caster), and elemental weapon Endows that buff allies' weapons rather than nuking directly. This is a direct read of which skill IDs are and aren't on Sage's tree, not a balance opinion — the nuke kit genuinely isn't there. If you want Wizard's damage ceiling, play Wizard; if you want to be the anti-mage specialist and party enabler, Sage's kit is built specifically for that.

Higher VIT than Wizard's build is worth it here — Sage spends more time in melee range of casters when using Magic Rod/Spell Break.

Skill Progression

Core

  • Study (Advanced Book) — the root of Sage's own tree; needed for everything else.
  • Magic Rod (requires Study 4) — absorbs an incoming spell as SP; your core anti-caster tool.
  • Spell Break (requires Magic Rod 1) — interrupts enemy casts outright.
  • Free Cast (requires Cast Cancel 1) — lets you move while casting, a real quality-of-life skill.

Useful Later

  • Elemental Endows (Blaze/Tsunami/Tornado/Quake) — buff an ally's weapon with an element; genuinely useful for a party, not for yourself.
  • Land Protector (requires Volcano/Deluge/Whirlwind 3 each) — strong party defense against ground-targeted AoE.
  • Dispel (requires Spell Break 3) — strips buffs from a target.

Optional

  • Hindsight (requires Free Cast 4) — auto-casts a low-level spell on hit, a light damage supplement.

Equipment Progression

Starter/Early Game: the same Staff (ATK 15, +2 INT, +15% MATK) shop-confirmed at Geffen and Yuno works fine here too, despite Sage not using MATK the way Wizard does — the flat INT bonus still helps your SP pool and support formulas.

Mid/Late Game: card your weapon for INT/SP (see Cards below); cloth armor, and accessories that round out VIT for survivability in melee-adjacent anti-caster play.

Weapon Progression & Cards

Same shop-confirmed Staff as Wizard (Geffen, Yuno) — no separate Sage-specific weapon exists in this data.

  • Elder Willow Card: +2 INT flat.
  • Andre Larva Card: +1 INT, +10 Max SP — extra SP matters more for Sage's utility-heavy kit than for Wizard's burn-and-refill nuking.

What Should I Farm?

  • Elder Willow Card and Andre Larva Card — same as Wizard's picks, both genuinely useful here too.

Party Play

This is where Sage is confirmed strong: Magic Rod/Spell Break shut down enemy casters protecting your party, Land Protector denies ground AoE, and Endows give your melee allies real elemental damage. If you're picking Sage, plan around this role rather than expecting Wizard-style solo nuking — per the caveat at the top of this guide, the solo picture specifically is still being investigated further.
